Guaranteed Renewable

An insurance policy provision that guarantees the insurer must renew the policy as long as premiums are paid on time, but allows the company to increase premiums for entire classes of policyholders. The insurer cannot cancel or refuse to renew the policy based on individual claims or health changes.

Example

The disability insurance policy was guaranteed renewable, meaning the company couldn't cancel it even after the policyholder filed multiple claims, though premiums could increase for all similar policies.

Memory Tip

Think 'GR = Get Renewed' - you're guaranteed to get your policy renewed, but the price might change for everyone.

Why It Matters

This provision protects policyholders from losing coverage due to claims history or health deterioration, ensuring continuity of protection when it's needed most. It's particularly important for health and disability insurance where coverage becomes more valuable as health declines.

Common Misconception

Many people confuse guaranteed renewable with noncancelable, thinking their premiums can never increase, but guaranteed renewable policies allow premium increases for entire classes of similar policies. Only noncancelable policies lock in both coverage and premium rates.

In Practice

A 35-year-old purchases a guaranteed renewable disability insurance policy for $150 monthly. After filing two disability claims over five years, the insurance company cannot single her out for cancellation or rate increases. However, if the insurer raises premiums for all similar policies due to higher-than-expected claims across the entire class, her premium might increase to $175 monthly, but her coverage continuation is still guaranteed as long as she pays the new rate.

Etymology

This term developed from early 20th century insurance contracts, combining 'guaranteed' protection with 'renewable' from Latin 'renovare' meaning to make new again or restore.
