Inland Marine Insurance

A type of property insurance that covers movable goods and equipment while in transit over land, as well as certain types of property regardless of location. Despite its name, it has nothing to do with water and originated from marine insurance principles applied to land-based transportation.

Example

The construction company purchased inland marine insurance to protect their $200,000 excavator while it was being transported between job sites and to cover their tools stored in the equipment trailer.

Memory Tip

Remember 'Inland Marine = Land-based Mobile' - it covers things that move around on land, like ships that sailed inland on rivers in the old days.

Why It Matters

Many business owners and individuals don't realize that standard property insurance may not cover equipment, tools, or goods while they're being transported or temporarily located elsewhere. Inland marine insurance fills these critical gaps, preventing significant financial losses during transit or off-premises storage.

Common Misconception

People often think inland marine insurance is related to boats or water activities because of the word 'marine.' In reality, it's primarily used for land-based coverage of movable property and has no connection to watercraft insurance.

In Practice

A wedding photographer owns $25,000 worth of camera equipment that she regularly transports to venues. Her home insurance only covers the equipment while it's at her house. She purchases inland marine insurance for $800 annually, which covers her cameras and lenses anywhere she takes them. When her camera bag is stolen from her car at a wedding venue, the inland marine policy pays the $8,000 replacement cost, while her homeowner's policy would have provided no coverage for this off-premises loss.

Etymology

Evolved from traditional marine insurance in the 19th century when insurers extended ocean cargo coverage to include land transportation segments of shipping journeys. 'Inland' distinguishes it from ocean marine insurance.
